Job description

TECH LEAD - PRODUCT TEAM - CONTRACT - LONDON - ECOMMERCE

The Technical Lead of a Product Team provides guidance to the development team, makes architectural decisions for the product within the overall architectural guardrails, and ensures the scalability, reliability, and maintainability of the product, including systems built and owned.

The TL works in partnership with the Product Manager (PM) to lead a healthy, high functioning team that can deliver at pace. They help the PM understand the technical complexity of potential improvements to the product, allowing estimates to be produced which aid capacity planning within the team. They are considered a senior engineer capable of mentoring more junior members and someone who can collaborate closely with architects.

Responsibilities

  • Co-Lead one of our cross-functional, cross-platform Product teams (aka "squads") to become a high-performing team.
  • Work together with the PM to make decisions on behalf of the team around ways of working, delivery and prioritisation.
  • Own the technical roadmap for the product working within the wider Architecture and Engineering community.
  • Work with the team to provide estimation of the work required to fulfil the roadmap.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, helping them to better understand their assigned work and growing their technical skills in the process.
  • Help remove technical blockers that inhibit delivery - eg. ensuring every developer on your team has the right access to the third-party services that we use.
  • Identify and address technical debt proactively to prevent it from accumulating and hindering future development.
  • Help design systems that can scale horizontally or vertically to accommodate future growth.
  • Implement strategies to enhance the reliability and security of the product, including fault tolerance, monitoring, and disaster recovery.
  • Ensure that the codebase is maintainable by following coding standards, reviews, modular design, and proper documentation.

Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrable proficiency and prior experience in security minded designs, implementations, and integrations.
  • Experience with backend (Java Spring MVC/Boot, Microsoft SQL Server etc.) and front-end applications and technologies (React, Typescript, NextJS, iOS, Android). (desirable)
  • Experience working with teams using agile methodologies, ideally with Jira and Confluence
  • Experience of OOTB SAP Commerce capabilities, configuration and use of these. Can articulate the use of OOTB capability vs integration and customisation efforts with the related benefits and issues (desirable)
  • Understanding and experience with SDLC methodologies (such as Waterfall, Spiral, Agile software development, Rapid prototyping, DevOps, Platform Engineering and SRE)
  • Experience in large scale and high-volume segmenting pricing and promotions to different user groups. (ideally in a Loyalty scenario)
  • Experience working in the fashion retail industry (desirable)
  • SAP Emarsys and/or experience with enterprise marketing platform/teams.

Competencies

  • Is an excellent (servant) leadership who puts the needs of the team (and its goals) above your own.
  • Understands various agile methodologies (such as Scrum and Kanban) and has built high performing teams.
  • You're an advocate for cross-functional ways of working and set clear expectations for how product, design and engineering should operate in that model.
  • Able to understand and discuss technical concepts, so you're able to lead on discussion around potential trade-offs of new ideas, with a focus on speed of delivery.
  • Proven track record of taking ownership and successfully delivering results in challenging environments. You can simplify complex ideas and maximise business value.
  • You create a positive team spirit, focus on team engagement, and embody the company values.
  • You'll demonstrate excellent communication skills, both verbally and in written form. An expert in the power of Slack to drive asynchronous communication and culture change.
