The demand for freelance work in the creative, digital and tech industries has considerably grown over the last few years with freelancers taking over 40% of the media workforce, as highlighted in our freelancer report for 2017/18.
Whether you’re just about to make the switch or have been freelancing for a while, Major Players’ freelance consultant, Tiffany Trigg, shares her top tips for staying ahead of the game.
BE FLEXIBLE
One of the most important aspects of freelancing is learning to be as flexible as possible. Clients love their freelances to be readily available, adapting to their needs and open to new ideas – as well as bringing a few yourself – be versatile.
DON’T ASSUME ANYTHING
Before you start a new job, make sure to check in with your consultant. Logistics such as working hours, day rate or overtime should be discussed before you start a position ensuring there are no hiccups or miscommunications.
AVAILABILITY
Always keep your consultant up to date on current projects and your availability. The freelance market changes rapidly meaning it’s essential to stay on top of your placements and organise your time effectively. Make sure you’re sending in your CV frequently, that way it’s always on the radar and up to date.
Keep a record of who has received your CV and the bookings you’ve said yes to. If your CV lands on the same clients desks a number of times, it might show a lack of communication.
BE PREPARED
Freelancers are often called in at a moment of crisis; the client may well be going through a massive pitch or have a tight deadline. There is a chance that, as a freelancer, you’ll be thrown in the deep end and might not have access to resources such as a laptop or designated desk. Make sure you’re as prepared as possible and do the best job you can.
JOIN THE COLLECTIVE
At Major Players, we understand how important it is for freelancers to stay in the loop, that’s why we created the Major Collective. If you work through Major Players on at least three bookings after registering, you will be automatically enrolled on the scheme.
As a Major Collective freelancer, you’ll get the best bookings through our ever growing database, spaces for free training and access to flexi working at our Covent Garden office. A discounted payroll scheme is offered, free IPA membership four Major Meetups throughout the year and the ultimate freelancers party every summer. The party not only provides a networking opportunity to meet your peers but is an excuse to let your hair down and reward yourself for working hard.
