Whether you are a budding freelancer or looking to take your first step into the world of contract, we've got 5 simple tips to help your day-to-day as a freelancer.
AVAILABILITY
As a freelancer you need to be available, most roles will start within a couple of days, or in a week of them being called in. Make sure you have your phone and voicemail on and check your emails regularly. If a role comes in you don’t want to miss out. Make sure that you keep your CV / Portfolio as up to date as possible so that when roles come in we can get your details over as soon as possible.
PAYMENT
There are many different ways that you can get paid as a freelancer. You can set up a Ltd Company or join an umbrella company, some companies will let you join their PAYE but this is very case by case. Also most companies nowdays will not pay sole traders so this isn’t the best option if you are looking to be freelancer. If you would like to know more about the different payment options then please contact your consultant. Working through Major Players will mean that you need to fill in a timesheet and get it signed off by your line manager weekly – we need this to make sure we pay you correctly and on time.
BE FLEXIBLE
As a freelancer you know your abilities and the rate that you would normally charge. Stick to this – however have some flexibility, client’s day rates and expectations differ. There are different needs for using a freelancer it could be holiday cover, a new win, sickness cover or a company structure change. Keep this is mind, most freelancers are called in last minute and to cover in a crisis.
REPRESENT YOURSELF
As a freelancer you need to represent yourself and other freelancers. Present yourself well and in line with the company, ask questions if you are unsure of something. People would rather this than to find out further down the line that you didn’t understand. Guide clients, if they aren’t sure about how freelancers should work then explain to them. You want to maintain relationships everywhere; you never know what could happen next or what opportunities will arise from one job or meeting.
KNOW YOUR CLIENT
As consultants it is our job to inform you on the client that you are going to work with, however please take time to look at their website, the work they are producing, the clients they work with. Have a look at any social media and also if you know the name of the person you will be working with, have a look at their LinkedIn. The more informed you are before a role the easier it will be to hit the ground running.
